How Zakat Is Calculated

Zakat is calculated as 2.5% of your total zakatable wealth (cash, gold, silver, business assets, and investments, minus any debts owed), provided that net wealth meets or exceeds the Nisab threshold.

Nisab is traditionally based on the value of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver at current market prices. If your net zakatable wealth is below the Nisab threshold, Zakat is not obligatory for that year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Nisab and why does it matter?

Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth a person must have before Zakat becomes obligatory. If your net zakatable wealth is below the Nisab value, you are not required to pay Zakat that year.

Should I use gold or silver Nisab?

Both are valid according to different scholarly opinions. The silver Nisab is lower, meaning more people qualify to pay Zakat; the gold Nisab is higher. Many recommend the silver Nisab as the more cautious, inclusive standard, though you should follow the guidance you trust.

Do I subtract my debts before calculating Zakat?

Yes, debts and liabilities due are typically subtracted from your total assets before calculating the 2.5% Zakat rate, since Zakat is due on net wealth, not gross assets.

Is Zakat due on jewelry I wear regularly?

This is a point of scholarly difference. Some scholars exempt personal-use jewelry from Zakat, while others include all gold and silver regardless of use. This calculator includes all entered gold/silver value; consult a knowledgeable scholar for guidance specific to your situation.

How often do I pay Zakat?

Zakat is due once per lunar year (Hawl) on wealth that has remained at or above the Nisab threshold for that full year.
